Great Raleigh Road Race

I just signed up for the 4 mile Great Raleigh Road Race on 4 July. I will be running for BDO in conjunction with their Independence Day campaign. Hopefully, through this run we can convince more people to stay away from debt.

Would you sponsor a mile of my race?

No Debt for Valentine’s Day February 11, 2009

On Saturday, Feb 7th, a Valentine’s Day Debt Protest was sponsored by BeatingDebt.org.  From our account, it was a huge success.  In November, at our last Debt Protest, it was only me on the sidewalk protesting and making every effort to educate consumers on the evils of overspending and debt.  This time, BDO had another member protesting debt alongside me.  This is great news because it was a 100% increase from our last protest, which means success.

This is success because we are reaching out to people and the community is starting to realize the destruction that is caused by overspending and debt.  In addition, the latest numbers from the Federal Reserve show that Consumer Credit Debt is going down.  This proves that people are not interested in taking on more debt.  We are starting to get sick and tired of being in debt all the time.  People are starting to realize the beauty and freedom that can be experienced when we purchase things with cash instead of credit.  People have realized the short-term pain of making extra payments on their credit cards leads to long-term financial gain and success not experienced through any credit card or loan.  We might be a nation of consumers, but we don’t have to be slaves to our consumption as well.

If you are committed to beating debt, I challenge you to align yourselves with our movement by beginning your race to beat debt

Help us get the word out about the evils of overspending and debt.

Help us be the alternate voice to the marketers that are trying to convince us to buy, buy, buy.

Your support can make a difference in the lives of those struggling with overspending and debt brought on by a world of commercials, envy, and keeping up with the Joneses.  Remember, what we have is not as important as what we can offer to others who are in need.

Get rid of your debt and find yourself free.

Debt Protest - Nov 28, 2008

VALENTINE’S DAY DEBT PROTEST

7 Feb 2009

Debt Evangelism

Join us as we meet in our communities to tell others not to overspend and go into debt this Valentine’s Day.

We do not have to buy a gift to give a gift!
Debt does not lead to happiness!

BeatingDebt.org is asking volunteers to do three things.

  1. Organize with your friends and family at anytime on the 7th of Feb. Be sure to protest your personal message against debt on public sidewalks. Make sure to get authorization from your local government.
  2. Post your message of protest on a sheet of paper and place them on street polls and community events boards on Feb 7th.  You can get an example here.
  3. Prepare a blog that provides for your readers with some answers as to how to stay away from debt and ways to give without having to go into debt this Valentine’s Day.

Tell us how what you are doing on Feb 7th in your community by RSVPing.

The “Debt Protest” should educate consumers on their pre-Valentine’s Day shopping to stay away from consumer debt.

Let us rise up and be an alternate voice to the corporations marketing to us to buy, buy, buy on Valentine’s Day.

In response to AdBusters.org, “Buy Nothing Day“, BeatingDebt.org came out and continued the effort by protesting debt and overspending.

I was the only one able to show up for this event, so I was a little nervous.  Honestly, I’ve never done anything like this (alone).  I’ve done car washes for my church and high school, but those were different (with lots of people).  This was much different.  I’ve never been on the outside trying to go against the grain like this.

It was surreal to see the amount of cars in the turning lane to go to the mall just staring at my sign.  Yes, I did get some honks, some evil stares, and the ladies going by intent on not looking or “allowing the message to mean them, personally”.  But after a while it was fine.  No one threw tomatoes.

~~~~
It was actually inspiring.  If BeatingDebt.org is going to be able to break out of the financial guru melting pot, we are going to have to do something new.  So, how about this?  Protesting?  Or the “Politically Correct” version, publically educating people on their spending decisions!
We need less talk and more action
Go to any bookstore and count the amount of self-help financial books that are talking about how they can save you money and beat debt.  Countless.  Everyone has the “new” trick.  But as their book sales skyrockets, consumer debt grows to $14 trillion and nothing changes.
We need to collect an army of volunteers that will descend on a city at strategic public locations and help educate consumers on debt and overspending.  Maybe if they see others doing it and are proud of it, they will start reducing this $14 trillion consumer debt, instead of letting it grow.  Maybe?
The Board of Directors and I are discussing the 2009 operational plan for BeatingDebt.org.  We are strongly leaning towards more “protests” with more volunteers to make our impact on consumer debt and spending.  To make public expressions of education to “Stop spending money we don’t have.”
What do you think we should do?
In response to the challenge that AdBusters.org is presenting about the “Buy Nothing Day” on November 28th,
Beating Debt is accepting the challenge and will be “protesting” in Jacksonville, North Carolina on November 28th.  You can help us by:
  • Volunteering to spend an hour protesting.
  • Bringing a poster that says either: “You don’t have to buy a gift, to give a gift.”; “Debt does not lead to happiness.”; “$14 Trillion in consumer debt is enough!”
  • Donate money, so we can buy poster boards and markers for volunteers to use.
  • Pray we can make an impact in the local community.
Consumerism is the idea that we buy more than our basic needs to bring happiness.  Wikipedia explains consumerism as “the equation of personal happiness with the purchase of material possessions”.  The true form of consumerism goes against what the Lord desires.  Therefore, the anti-consumerism movement is not a fringe movement, but one that should be adopted and led by the Christian community.
God provides us money in order to provide for our needs (Philipians 4:19) and to test our faithfulness to Him and His Word (Matthew 25:21).  God gives generously as an example to what we should be doing with our money ( 2 Corinthians 9:8; Luke 12:32-34)  As He gives us money, we take what we need, and then pass along to others our excess.  This is demonstrated by Ron Hutchcraft’s Thanksgiving dinner illustration.  As God passes our “Thanksgiving dinner” around the table, we should understand social norms by taking some and passing the rest for others to enjoy.  God has enough “food” for everyone, but if we don’t pass it along, the people down the table will not receive His blessing.  Therefore, we will not fulfill His Will for our money and fail our test of faithfulness with our money.
On November 28th, 2008, AdBusters.org is advertising a Buy Nothing Day for North America.  This is an important day to make a statement to our government, corporations, churches, and neighbors that we do not want to be apart of the “Consume Everything” cultural.  Make this day a day of commitment to God and to live a simple life of giving, generosity, and beating debt.  Please put this day on your calendar and decide how you will show your support to turn this cultural of consumerism towards the generous giving that God desires.
LUKE 12:15
BeatingDebt.org created a simple file that calculates when you can expect to be out of debt.  This file will take your debt amounts, interest rates, and any celebration payments after each debt is repaid and determine when you will earn your freedom away from debt.
When using this tool, it does not matter if you decide to list the debts highest to lowest by owed amounts or by interest rates.  Try it each way and see which one will get your debts paid off faster.
BeatingDebt.org encourages users to employ the rollover method of debt repayment.  This calculator will assume that you will be dedicated and roll each payment over to the next debt, enabling you to pay off the debts faster.
This calculator was created for our Keeping Pace group, but you can purchase a copy by going to our resource page.  Use it today, take a picture of your expected payoff day, and post the picture in our “Independence Day” project.
