Debt Protest - Nov 28, 2008

TAX DAY DEBT PROTEST

15 April 2009

Debt Evangelism

Join us as we meet in our communities to tell others not to overspend and go into debt this April 15th Tax Season.

We will not take out a loan to get our refund faster!
We will not spend more than our refund!
Debt does not lead to happiness!

BeatingDebt.org is asking volunteers to do three things.

  1. Organize with your friends and family at anytime on the 15th of April to protest debt. Be sure to protest your personal message against debt on public sidewalks. Make sure to get authorization from your local government.
  2. Post your message of protest on a sheet of paper and place them on street polls and community event boards on April 15th.  You can get an example here.
  3. Prepare a blog entry on why we should not take on more debt this tax season.

Tell us what you are doing on April 15th in your community by RSVPing.

The “Debt Protest” should educate consumers on the dangers of overspending and debt.

Let us rise up and be an alternate voice to the corporations marketing to us to buy, buy, buy.

Consumerism is the idea that we buy more than our basic needs to bring happiness.  Wikipedia explains consumerism as “the equation of personal happiness with the purchase of material possessions”.  The true form of consumerism goes against what the Lord desires.  Therefore, the anti-consumerism movement is not a fringe movement, but one that should be adopted and led by the Christian community.

God provides us money in order to provide for our needs (Philipians 4:19) and to test our faithfulness to Him and His Word (Matthew 25:21).  God gives generously as an example to what we should be doing with our money ( 2 Corinthians 9:8; Luke 12:32-34)  As He gives us money, we take what we need, and then pass along to others our excess.  This is demonstrated by Ron Hutchcraft’s Thanksgiving dinner illustration.  As God passes our “Thanksgiving dinner” around the table, we should understand social norms by taking some and passing the rest for others to enjoy.  God has enough “food” for everyone, but if we don’t pass it along, the people down the table will not receive His blessing.  Therefore, we will not fulfill His Will for our money and fail our test of faithfulness with our money.

On November 28th, 2008, AdBusters.org is advertising a Buy Nothing Day for North America.  This is an important day to make a statement to our government, corporations, churches, and neighbors that we do not want to be apart of the “Consume Everything” cultural.  Make this day a day of commitment to God and to live a simple life of giving, generosity, and beating debt.  Please put this day on your calendar and decide how you will show your support to turn this cultural of consumerism towards the generous giving that God desires.

Create more acceleration in your race to beat debt by using

BDO’s Race Training Exercises

Step 3:  Make a Plan

To race well, you must have a plan.  You can not get where you want to go unless you have a map.  Create your map or spending plan that allows you to balance your budget, save for the future, and beat debt.  This balanced plan of your finances will allow you to chart a course to your destination that will explain where you want your money to go and how much time it will realistically take to accomplish your plan.  Share this plan with your friends and family, so they can be creative as well in your solution to beat debt.

New BDO Mission Verse June 1, 2008

The Directors have chosen a new Bible verse to exemplify our mission.  We would like to share this verse with you to encourage you to adopt this verse as your mission verse on your journey to beat debt.

Hebrews 12:1–
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

Our core ideas of:

–     Fellowship.

–     Community.

–     Turning from sin of selfishness in our budget.

–     Focus on releasing the burdens of debt, and

–     Running to beat debt.

are all introduced in the above verse.

“Surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses” — At BeatingDebt.org, we are trying to create a sense of community for families that are committed to beating debt in their own financial race.  We are creating a community that is based on respect and encouragement.

“Let us throw off everything that hinders” — Let us commit to beating debt.  With this commitment comes a very difficult budgeting decision.  The necessity of things like digital cable, lattés at Starbucks, or other small delights must be carefully questioned.

“The Sin that so easily entangles” — Many times, it is our own sin of selfishness that caused our debt to outpace our finances.  This same sin of selfishness continues to break our will/commitment to beating debt.

“Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us” — Let us use the community of the internet, prayer, focus, and perseverance to help us run this financial race and beat debt.

How can this verse help you stay focused on your commitment?

What other verses help you stay focused on your goals?
