On October 25, 2009, Eric Swanson, Executive Director of BeatingDebt.org, ran 26.2 miles in the 34th Marine Corps Marathon.  Wearing the Team BDO shirt, he ran to raise awareness of the growing addiction to overspending and personal debt among Americans.

Team BDO has a $50 minimum donation amount to run with one of the BDO shirts.  Below is a short list of other organizations and their minimums to run for their charity.

Charity Min Amount to Run
Susan G. Komen $2200
Alzheimer’s Association $1000
St Jude Children’s Hospital $1000
American Cancer Society $950
Inheritance for Hope $500

Eric did however create a goal of $2620 to help support BDO place more educational advertisements to warn people against overspending and going into more debt.  He was able to raise $139.

Getting ready to run the MCM

The race went very well for Eric as he finished the race around 4 hours.  The weather was brisk and the route was mostly flat for the final 16 miles.  He was challenged in the beginning because he joined the 4:30 group at the start of the marathon.  This meant that there were many people ahead of him, increasing the congestion among the 35,000 people that ran that day.  Not until mile 7 was Eric able to start swerving between people and make up some time.  Additionally, the lines for the restrooms were extremely long in the beginning, so by Eric stopping at mile 4 caused a 15 minute delay in his run time as well.  After mile 7, Eric seemed to have a boost of energy because he stepped up the pace and was able to quickly make up time without hitting his “wall” or sustaining injuries.  The Lord blessed in all aspects of this marathon, from great training to a motivating, injury free run.  Overall, it was a great time to get out in the nation’s capital and run for BeatingDebt.org.

Just finished the MCM

Lessons from Labrador August 27, 2009

Wilfred Grenfell

When missionary Wilfred Grenfell began work among the fishermen of Labrador in 1892, he found them trapped in a vicious credit system. This “truck system” was not unlike the sharecropping in the southern United States which kept blacks in virtual slavery long after the Emancipation Proclamation. There are lessons to be learned from the situation and Grenfell’s solution.

Dependent on sales of fish harvested in summer, Livyeres (Labradoreans) had to borrow against next-year’s anticipated catch for winter. The Biblical adage proved true: “the borrower is servant to the lender” (Proverbs 22:7). Most were so deeply in debt they had no hope of extricating themselves; and often could not even calculate how much they owed. Merchants priced goods at whim and advanced only what credit they chose. Worse yet, they found ways to pass the expense of the lazy upon the industrious, with the usual result of socialism, that hard workers resented slackers and reduced their own efforts.

The results were sometimes desperate. Grenfell recounted the extreme example of a Mr. Olliver, who, having exhausted every resource, and failing in efforts to borrow even a handful of flour from his distant neighbors, was unable to bear the hungry cries of his youngsters, so sent his wife and two older children out to forage, and killed the three remaining babes and himself.

With gusto, and vision, Grenfell undertook to remedy the deplorable situation. He solicited clothing from England for the worst-clad, whose condition in winter was pitiable. This raised howls from the merchants, who said they would be ruined if their serfs obtained for nothing what they hoped to sell them on credit. Not that Grenfell tolerated spongers: “The Labrador has taught me one truth, which as a physician I never forget, that is, coddling is the terrible menace of civilization, and ‘to endure hardness’ is the best preparation for a good soldier.”

The Livyeres needed more than handouts, however. They needed better means than hunting, scavenging, and borrowing to provide their winter necessities. They needed some long-term way to assist themselves. Grenfell’s plan was to offer a minimum of material assistance, to establish cooperative stores which the fishermen operated to their own advantage, to create industry for the Livyeres, and to educate the children out of their parent’s rut.

He imported reindeer to enrich their winter diet with milk and meat, established a lumber mill, a barrel factory (fish were packed in barrels), and a shipyard—all of which offered employment when fishing was impossible. Millennia earlier, Solomon had counseled diversification, saying, “Sow your seed in the morning and at evening let not your hands be idle…” (Ecclesiastes 11:6). Grenfell’s principle was the same, only substituting for morning the summer and for evening the winter.

The Labrador story is not merely of historical interest. It serves as a warning for lenders. Unjust systems hurt them, too, and not just spiritually. In one year, every bank in Newfoundland failed, pointing up the rottenness of the system.

Borrowers, learn from Labrador! Endure hardship today rather than fall into debt; but if you cannot avoid the pitfall, extricate yourselves as quickly as possible. Find additional work (the sawmill); cut costs (the co-operatives); look about for substitutes to traditional methods (the reindeer). If Grenfell can teach those lessons, he speaks still from beyond the grave.

Taxes or Charity, your choice August 19, 2009

To understand this blog, we must agree on 4 concepts.

  1. God owns everything.
  2. We are merely managers of His resources.
  3. God desires to aid the hungry, sick, and hurting.
  4. God will always get His mission accomplished.

poor man in guadalajara - Arturo Avila

With these concepts in mind, we must ask ourselves this: What happens when people are stingy with God’s resources?

God grants us resources in abundance, so we may

  1. use what we NEED, and then
  2. use the rest to accomplish His mission, which should include aiding the hungry, sick, and hurting.

Providing aid to the needy usually requires money.  When we are confronted by the hungry, sick, and hurting, we have two choices.  Either we can give to charity to help in God’s mission, or God can use the government to tax money of our pockets.

Remember, God will accomplish His mission because He owns everything.  Even if we are stingy, God has the last say in the matter.  If you refuse to give, He can use worldly forces to legally take the money away from you to help others.

The next time you are blessed with resources and have already taken what you need, determine how you want the rest to be distributed.  Do you want to give to charities that you know you can trust, or do you want the government to tax it out of you?  Either way, what is left is not yours.  God has already determined it to be used as blessing to others.

~~~~~~~~~~~
How does blessing others bless God?
Have you experienced God using your “extra” resources to bless others?
Which method do you prefer to distribute God’s resource to those in need?
How does personal debt show God our lack of generosity?
Giving God His Due August 17, 2009
By Domestic Goddess
Today, our pastor talked about a convention he attended and some things he learned from Rick Warren, the guest speaker. Before writing The Purpose Driven Life, Rick and his wife had committed to tithing to God in a very uncommon way. Every year, they would take another percent of their income and add it to their tithe. Instead of giving 10%, they raised their tithes to 11, 12, 15%. I don’t know how high they actually got before The Purpose Driven Life was published, but I imagine it must have been pretty high because it took a long while to get to the point in his life where God had prepared him to write the book.
Once The Purpose Driven Life was published, money came rolling in. That book is actually the #2 bestseller in the entire WORLD. It’s second behind the Bible. :) Our pastor said Rick got to a point where he was excited about the prospects that money could bring him…until God reminded him otherwise. Rick become impressed with the fact that the money was God’s and that he should remain in his “old” home and continue to use his “old” truck. He didn’t need more than he already had, and if he did, God would provide. What a way to be kept humble!
What’s more, the success of The Purpose Driven Life has allowed the Warrens to give 90% of their income to God’s kingdom. How amazing! They live on the 10% normally allotted to God and give God the 90% allotted to them. Would that I could do the same! Thankfully, our family is debt-free, so we can give without worrying about where the money is going to come from.
But I have to wonder about people who are in debt. How hard it must be for them to give even the “minimum” 10% to God! It’s hard to trust anyone with money, even God. The laws of mathematics say that 0-x=-x. But when we give to God, He breaks those laws (He can because He created them). 0-x=enough. He ALWAYS provides for those who are faithful and trust Him. I encourage you to give your tithe, even if you don’t think you can afford it. Trust me, God math is incredible.
Before we were debt-free, we struggled to make the right money decisions. However, we never ever considered stopping our tithe. In fact, it was one of the things we agreed we’d always do despite our circumstances. Whatever we have, be it little or much, is from God. We owe him much, so why begrudge Him the 10% He asks us for? Such were our thoughts six years ago during marriage counseling, and five years into our marriage, we see the fruits of giving to God.
I urge you to examine your finances carefully. Decide to pay God before you pay yourself and definitely before you pay your bills. If you’re in debt, make plans to get out of it. Christ calls us to give freely, but we can’t do that until we get rid of our allegiances to our credit companies. God says the borrower is a slave to the master. Stop working to further someone’s agenda and put your money to work for God’s kingdom!
Finally, analyze whether you can give a little more generously to those on mission for God. You can give your money to your church, to missionaries, or to Christian non-profit organizations. Do a little research and give where your heart is. Stop being selfish with your money and give it to people who actually need it. Everything we do will be returned to us, not necessarily in the form of money, but in the form of blessings.
Great Raleigh Road Race 2009 Report July 6, 2009
Great Raleigh Road Race 2009On July 4th, Jason and I participated in the Great Raleigh Road Race.  We ran 4 miles for BeatingDebt.org to help raise money and awareness of the addiction Americans have to overspending and debt.  We ran in conjunction with BDO’s Team BDO efforts.  As you can see in the pictures, we were wearing our BDO T-Shirts.
It was a tough run for both of us.  Jason is a fast runner but he had to work all night and then run 4 miles.  So he was tired and slower than usual.  I was trying to keep up with Jason, so I was struggling to keep up and to go over all the hills on the course.  But overall it was a great time!
Hopefully, our T-Shirts helped raise the level of conversation about overspending and debt.
If you would like to sponsor this race or the marathon coming up, please click here.
Great Raleigh Road Race
I just signed up for the 4 mile Great Raleigh Road Race on 4 July. I will be running for BDO in conjunction with their Independence Day campaign. Hopefully, through this run we can convince more people to stay away from debt.
Would you sponsor a mile of my race?
Gears and Cheers Bike Race Report May 31, 2009
Before the Gears & Cheers 09
Before the race.
On Saturday, May 30th, 2009, Gaby, the kids, and I completed the Gears and Cheers 09.  We entered the 25 mile bike race to help raise awareness of the evils of overspending and debt and to raise money for BDO through its TEAM BDO efforts.  With our good attitudes and our BDO T-Shirts, we thought we were ready to do this race.
12 mile rest stop
12 mile rest stop
It was a great day to go bicycling.  Unfortunately, due to our vacation schedules, we actually did not train for this race.  We felt bad about that, so the day before we rode for 8 miles and thought we were ready to bike the 25 miles the next day.  Well, actually, waking up and doing 25 miles without any training is very tough to do.  I rode the first 12.5 miles with the kids and then Gaby rode with them the second half.  It took every ounce of strength and patience to get through the course with 2 kids in tow.  Fortunately, during the second half we had an experienced volunteer to help give encouragement to us as we struggled to peddle and to take care of the kids who also were not prepared for such a long trek inside a bike trailer.
After the Gears & Cheers 09
After the race
Fortunately, we made it.  By leaning on each other’s strengths, praying, and the volunteer, we made the 25 mile bike ride.  We enjoyed the fresh water and after race food they provided for us to replenish all the nutrients we lost.
Looking back there were so many mistakes we made by being novice bicyclists.  Too many to count.  However, it did not discourage us from trying our hand at bicycling again.  We had a great time together and created some good memories.
Unfortunately, we did this race at a loss to BDO.  We did not have any sponsors for this race to help raise any money for BDO’s Educational Ad project.  So, if you would like to make a delayed donation, please do so by clicking here.
It is not about charity, it is about justice. May 16, 2009
I’ve become a true believer that God speaks to us in the most unlikely places.  He speaks to His people in many unlikely things, people, and places such as a burning bush, a previous enemy of God (Saul), and inside the belly of a fish.  So, if we are to hear God, let us not assume that it will always come from our spiritual leader.  Keep your eyes and ears open to the Lord and seek His Will.  When you hear his small, gentle voice follow it like your life depended on it!
In the following video we learn from an unlikely person that some of the problems we find in this world are not a matter of charity, but a matter of justice.  Giving to the poor and ensuring some basic needs are not a matter of charity, but of justice.  As Christians, we should rally behind Jesus.  Jesus is among the poor, the humbled, and the weak.  Lift them up as a matter of justice, and you will be exalting Jesus.
As a matter of financial decisions, as Christians we must recognize that our debt takes away our generosity, our charity, our justice that we can deliver to Jesus.  By giving up our debt, we will have more disposable income to lift up the poor, the humbled, and the weak as a matter of justice.
Join with us today to beat debt.
