On October 25, 2009, Eric Swanson, Executive Director of BeatingDebt.org, ran 26.2 miles in the 34th Marine Corps Marathon. Wearing the Team BDO shirt, he ran to raise awareness of the growing addiction to overspending and personal debt among Americans.
Team BDO has a $50 minimum donation amount to run with one of the BDO shirts. Below is a short list of other organizations and their minimums to run for their charity.
| Charity | Min Amount to Run |
| Susan G. Komen | $2200 |
| Alzheimer’s Association | $1000 |
| St Jude Children’s Hospital | $1000 |
| American Cancer Society | $950 |
| Inheritance for Hope | $500 |
Eric did however create a goal of $2620 to help support BDO place more educational advertisements to warn people against overspending and going into more debt. He was able to raise $139.
The race went very well for Eric as he finished the race around 4 hours. The weather was brisk and the route was mostly flat for the final 16 miles. He was challenged in the beginning because he joined the 4:30 group at the start of the marathon. This meant that there were many people ahead of him, increasing the congestion among the 35,000 people that ran that day. Not until mile 7 was Eric able to start swerving between people and make up some time. Additionally, the lines for the restrooms were extremely long in the beginning, so by Eric stopping at mile 4 caused a 15 minute delay in his run time as well. After mile 7, Eric seemed to have a boost of energy because he stepped up the pace and was able to quickly make up time without hitting his “wall” or sustaining injuries. The Lord blessed in all aspects of this marathon, from great training to a motivating, injury free run. Overall, it was a great time to get out in the nation’s capital and run for BeatingDebt.org.

On July 4th, Jason and I participated in the Great Raleigh Road Race. We ran 4 miles for BeatingDebt.org to help raise money and awareness of the addiction Americans have to overspending and debt. We ran in conjunction with BDO’s Team BDO efforts. As you can see in the pictures, we were wearing our BDO T-Shirts.
It was a tough run for both of us. Jason is a fast runner but he had to work all night and then run 4 miles. So he was tired and slower than usual. I was trying to keep up with Jason, so I was struggling to keep up and to go over all the hills on the course. But overall it was a great time!
Hopefully, our T-Shirts helped raise the level of conversation about overspending and debt.

Gears and Cheers Bike Race Report May 31, 2009

On Saturday, May 30th, 2009, Gaby, the kids, and I completed the Gears and Cheers 09. We entered the 25 mile bike race to help raise awareness of the evils of overspending and debt and to raise money for BDO through its TEAM BDO efforts. With our good attitudes and our BDO T-Shirts, we thought we were ready to do this race.
It was a great day to go bicycling. Unfortunately, due to our vacation schedules, we actually did not train for this race. We felt bad about that, so the day before we rode for 8 miles and thought we were ready to bike the 25 miles the next day. Well, actually, waking up and doing 25 miles without any training is very tough to do. I rode the first 12.5 miles with the kids and then Gaby rode with them the second half. It took every ounce of strength and patience to get through the course with 2 kids in tow. Fortunately, during the second half we had an experienced volunteer to help give encouragement to us as we struggled to peddle and to take care of the kids who also were not prepared for such a long trek inside a bike trailer.
Fortunately, we made it. By leaning on each other’s strengths, praying, and the volunteer, we made the 25 mile bike ride. We enjoyed the fresh water and after race food they provided for us to replenish all the nutrients we lost.
Looking back there were so many mistakes we made by being novice bicyclists. Too many to count. However, it did not discourage us from trying our hand at bicycling again. We had a great time together and created some good memories.
Unfortunately, we did this race at a loss to BDO. We did not have any sponsors for this race to help raise any money for BDO’s Educational Ad project. So, if you would like to make a delayed donation, please do so by clicking here.

Building an emergency fund can take a very long time. Just when you get close to your funding goal, an emergency could arise, and you unwillingly return to square one in your financial freedom journey. Take heart. This is a marathon. This race is raced at a steady pace with an attitude of perseverance. In order to complete it, you must FOCUS.
When a man courts a woman, he is focused. When an athlete plays a game, he or she is focused. When an employee trains for a new job, he or she is focused. The same is true with working to beat debt. A lack of focus, a selfish nature, and unplanned emergencies all contributed to getting into debt. It will take motivation and FOCUS to overcome it.
We do not set out to get into debt for the pleasure of being in bondage or a slave to some institution. Too often, we want (and sometimes need) something, and we want or need it now. The terms on the credit card or loan agreement are easy to agree to, especially if the company dangles a large sum of money in front of us. But the debts (no matter how legitimate) always end up hurting in the here and now. There is always too much month at the end of the money. Sometimes we are afraid to face tomorrow.
Focus and perseverance. These are two elements to beating debt while saving something in an emergency fund and will help you find ways to spend less and make more of what you have. The following ideas will give you a place to start reducing your expenses.
1. Change the temperature. Turn down the thermostat in winter and raise it in the summer when no one is home. It does not take long to get the house back to a comfortable temperature once the family gets home. Leaving the HVAC on during the day when no one is home causes the unit to have to keeping turning on and off to keep the house at the desired temperature. Raise the thermostat to 79o during the hot months, and the A/C will not use as much energy to cool the house. Consider 65-68o for the winter when no one is home. Run the exhaust fan only when absolutely necessary. It sucks out valuable heated or cooled.
2. Use the oven as little as possible. Use the microwave, a crock pot, or the stove top instead. A stove top version of Tuna Noodle Casserole tastes just as good.
3. Turn off ‘phantom loads.’ These items use electricity 24/7. Phantoms include digital clocks, sound systems, TV, cable boxes, and computers and their peripherals. Unplug these items when not in use.
4. Switch to using compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs). A regular 100 watt bulb costs about $1 a month when used 3 hours/day. A CFL costs 25 cents/month! It is estimated that changing just 25% of your home bulbs can cut your electric bill in half.
So focus on what you can do to cut spending. Find one thing a month. Take small steps so you are more dedicated to completing the challenge. Put the savings in an emergency fund or toward a debt. Enjoy the satisfaction that results. Persevere .You CAN beat debt.
