For so long it has been institutionally and culturally accepted to be in debt. But what do these pictures have in common.

From Britain to America to Asia, people are rising up and protesting debt as being normal and accepted. Why is this happening?

“Just as the rich rule over the poor, so the borrower becomes the lender’s servant.” Pvbs 22:7

It is quite interesting after reading that verse from the Bible that God cautions us away from debt just as the protesters are doing. Taking the verse into context of the whole chapter of Proverbs, one could say that only a fool would be in debt. However, in today’s current economic systems and philosophies, debt is the main instrument of economic success of the entire world.

What happens to an economic system that is based on what God considers foolish?

On September 18th, the Federal Reserve released the anticipated debt amounts for the nation. As expected, consumers continue to spend more than they earn. The report shows how consumers are reacting to the downturn on the financial markets. In the second quarter, housing debt grew by only 0.8 percent, while consumer credit grew by 4.4 percent. In all, consumers took on almost $200 billion in debt to bring the current debt outstanding total for the second quarter to $14 trillion.

BeatingDebt.org updated the Consumer Debt Clock with this current information.

These numbers reveal the level of wealth, productivity, and lifestyle that we have given and contine to give to loan companies in America and abroad. This level of debt is the reason for our economic financial problems today. We need to work together to beat debt and start a movement to reverse this consumer debt clock from going up any longer.

The Consumer Debt Clock created by BeatingDebt.org recently reached a new record of $14 Trillion. Our nation’s consumers reached a new high in their addiction to debt. We continue to accept more debt to afford the lifestyle we want. The staggering amount of debt places more of our nation’s wealth into the hands of lenders and more families in the bondage of debt slavery. While the Consumer Debt Clock is a prediction based on past growth estimated by the Federal Reserve, the new results will be released on Sept 18th to ensure the Consumer Debt Clock was correct in its calculations. Furthermore, we will re-calibrate the clock with the data on the growth of our consumer debt.

I came across a very interesting article on MSN.com that poses the question “What if no one were fat?“. I bring this question up in this forum, because the marketing direction we are taking at BeatingDebt.org symbolizes reducing debt as running in a race and beating debt. I believe physical fitness is a large byproduct in the total makeover that is created on the journey to beat debt. There are so many negative aspects to holding onto and growing debt in our lives. However, once we commit to beating debt and start reducing our debt load, we find a renewed energy in our financial life, relationships, self-esteem, and even our physical fitness. The article went further and estimated that if no one in America were obese that the resulting savings per year to the economy would be $487 billion. On an individual level this calculates to an extra $4,000 a year.

What would you do with an extra $4,000 a year from being physically fit?

So, I believe that not only can physical fitness be a marketing direction for BeatingDebt.org, it can also be a real tool to beating debt. People talk about ways to reducing spending like changing out inefficient light bulbs, lowering the thermostat in the winter, or not eating out as much. However, we forget that huge savings to our budget can easily be attained from getting physical fit.

Here are some ways that you can put more physical fitness in your lifestyle:

-Stretching.

-Push-ups, sit-ups, and chin-ups in your home.

-Coordinate your next meeting as a walking or running meeting.

-Join an intramural sports league.

-Borrow exercise books or DVDs from the library or a friend.

-Swimming at the beach or local pool.

-Yard work.

What are some other ways you can help yourself be healthier and physically fit, thereby reducing your long term expenses?

Can being physically fit help you lose debt and help you achieve your debt payment goal?
