On 25 July, we decided to take the message of encouraging people to stay away from overspending and debt to our local flea market.  The Raleigh Flea Market is a great place to talk about these issues, because the entire experience is a cash-based system i.e. not many credits cards are accepted at the flea market.

We encouraged people to not overspend and to stay away from debt by passing out literature and getting more exposure to our slogan, “Debt does not lead to happiness.”

It was a good experience to reach out and interact with people about a sensitive issue that needs more attention and positive action.  We will start doing these once a month, just like we do our Debt Protest.

Independence Day Debt Protest 09 Report June 29, 2009

Independence Day Debt Protest 09
From 9am – 10am on Saturday, June 27th, I took my “Debt does not lead to happiness” poster and silently protested the addiction of  overspending and personal debt.  I would say there were about 1000 cars that travelled by that intersection of Raleigh, NC.  I got one honk, two thumbs up, many curious stares, and much more deliberate ignoring.  The last time I did a protest in February in Jacksonville, NC I got many more smiles and thumbs up.  There could be two reasons for the lack of enthusiasm for this message.  Either the truth of “Debt does not lead to happiness.” stung too hurtful for people in this area to give me a positive reaction or the recent surge in political dialogue in the government’s decisions to spend overshadowed the personal intent of this protest which lead to people not give me a positive reaction.  Either way, the message was put out there and the receivers had to take it and deal with it in their own way.  My hope is that it helped influence some decisions that day to not overspend or go into debt or at least raised the level of conversation within the car about personal finances.

I plan on doing another protest in August for the Back to School season.  My intent is to caution people from overspending and going into excessive debt during the “Back to School Sales”.

Will you join me in your community and protest personal debt to help educate people about the dangers of overspending?

Mad as … June 5, 2009

When will we see the truth of how debt affects us?

When will we turn off the TV and all its marketing ads telling us we are unhappy unless we buy their product/service?

When will we get sick and tired of being sick and tired of being in debt?

When will we get mad as $%#@ and desire to stop being in debt?

When will we earn our freedom away from debt, away from the marketers selling us “stuff”, away from the consumerism that keeps us locked inside a perpuetual need to shop and spend money?

Debt is slavery.  Rise up and get out of this “soft” slavery.  There is no need to write our congressmen.  There is only the need to earn your freedom from debt.  Free people have choices and voices.  Slaves do not.  And those that are free must rise up in defense of those that are not and fight to get our fellow brothers and sisters out of the slavery of debt.

By Ben Stein

We are more than our investments. We are more than the year-to-year or day-by-day changes in our net worth. We are what we do for charity. We are how we treat our family and friends. We are how we treat our dogs and cats. We are what we do for our community and our nation. If you had $100 million or $100,000 a year ago and now you have a lot less, you are still the same person. You are not a balance sheet, at least not one denominated in money, as was explained to me recently.

Activism for Politicians November 7, 2008

This blog entry is for Christians.

In this highly emotional election season there are a couple questions we must ask ourselves:

  1. How many Christians do you know sent emails to complete strangers on behalf of their candidate during this election cycle?
  2. How many Christians do you know made phone calls to complete strangers on behalf of their candidate during this election cycle?
  3. How many Christians do you know placed a yard sign or bumper sticker on their property on behalf of their candidate during this election cycle?
  4. How many Christians gave money on behalf of their candidate during this election cycle?

Now we must ask ourselves these questions as well:

  1. How many Christians do you know send emails to complete strangers on behalf of their faith in Jesus?
  2. How many Christians do you know make phone calls to complete strangers on behalf of their faith in Jesus?
  3. How many Christians do you know place a yard sign or bumper sticker on their property on behalf of their faith in Jesus?
  4. How many Christians do you know gave money on behalf of their faith in Jesus?

Christians, let us not lose sight of the true change that is needed in this country; that sinners come to faith in Jesus.

I challenge you to share your faith in Jesus over this next time period with the same enthusiasm that you gave your politician .  I challenge you to fight for your brother/sister/neighbor/stranger to live a better life in Jesus with the same enthusiasm that you gave your politician.  I challenge you to be that single light amongst the darkness.

Hold me accountable to these challenges as I am holding you accountable.
