Last year, a new slogan and documentary came out called “What would Jesus buy?“.  This documentary depicts the evils of consumerism, over consumption, and the commericialization of Christmas.  The Rev Billy leads his crew to shopping areas trying to turn customers into converts to the idea that “enough is enough”.  Rev Billy leads the Church of Stop Shopping in events that raise awareness to the over-consumption in America.

Check out the trailer below.

Now these economic times might inhibit some of the debauchery, but will it last?  Can we decide as a nation to stop spending money we don’t have and take up the anthem to “Live within our means”?

The official website also offers a good discussion guide to start the conversation about our addiction to debt and consumption of stuffPlease use this guide to start your own conversation with your family about debt and how you can make changes to your lifestyle.  Remember, shop responsibly!

~~

And if I may add one to the movie’s recommend list of things we can do about this problem in America:  Commit to buying products from those made by Christians.

Though the economic difficulties we have all experienced have created a definite decline in shopping (at least shopping recklessly!) this culture definitely is still in force. I personally have many friends that are not great at watching themselves when unleashed to the world of the holiday shopping rush.

It’s funny that we all see the negative effects of the economic downturn so easily, but that one can find a “silver lining” in just about anything. One of which is that people are being more careful with their money! About time!

Looks like a fascinating documentary!
