On Saturday. August 23rd I got to represent BeatingDebt.org at Jacksonville’s Mom Fest sponsored by MOPs. As you can see below, we had a great set up. We aren’t into mad money yet, so we had to do a homemade job on the presentation, but I think it came out really good.

The great thing was Joe (the Vice-President), his wife, my wife, and I got to reach out to the community and have some heart felt talks with some mothers. Besides passing out a lot of brochures, gaining contacts, and talking with people about our ideas, I think we also made a big impact at the conference itself. We really had the biggest sign at the festival, so the words “Beating Debt” were very noticeable. Even if a mother didn’t know what our booth was about and did not want to stop by and see it, you can tell from the words of “Beating Debt” that it causes one to start thinking about their own debt, how much they have, and how much they would like to get rid of it. The reason I bring this up is because I noticed many vendors giving us dirty looks. I want to believe it is because the sales that day weren’t as high as in past years. Normally, the festival to “celebrate mothers” turns into another business venture to take advantage of people and convince attendees to impulse shop. However, with our large sign telling people to beat debt, they had some psychological reinforcement to say NO to marketers trying to convince them to buy, buy, buy. I hope we made the impression to “Shop Responsibly“.
Anyway, on a disappointing note, there were not as many mothers there this time around. Mom Fest advertised at least 500 ladies were present at last years event. However, looking over the conference, I believe it was a lot less. Even still, we got to announce our presence. Furthermore, we were able to have a church open up their doors to allowing us to start a BDO Group. We will pursue that lead and let you know how that develops.
Finally, continue to pray for this organization. Many good things are happening and being developed. In addition, consider giving to BDO on a monthly basis, so we will have the continued means to raise awareness and educate people, including these mothers, about how they can experience joy and freedom apart from debt.

Kudos to you guys!
That must have been a first ever. :)
