Beat Debt with Dave Ramsey? August 14, 2008

I just heard a radio commercial about Dave Ramsey. The new tagline for his show is “Beat Debt and Build Wealth.”
Beat Debt.
Now, isn’t that confusing with the name of our organization being “Beating Debt” and all…
Some suggested when we were picking our name that “Beating Debt” might be perceived as too violent. We quickly had to explain that we were using the analogy of running a race, as if you beat one of your competitors to the goal. On our financial journey we want to beat debt to the finish line and be successful. We want to be victors!
Now that Dave Ramsey is talking up the “Beat Debt” slogan, our small non-profit is going to be inundated with people asking whether we stole the idea from him or if he stole the idea from us. The answer: Neither.
Our two organizations were going in different directions, and we yet came out with the same product. Weird, huh?
There are a lot of organizations and personalities that are ”selflessly” teaching users to reduce debt. Though BeatingDebt.org and Dave Ramsey have similiar lines of thought, our organizations are different. We are a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization. Whereas Dave Ramsey’s organization is guided by profit. We believe earning a profit and a living is justified. However, in a situation where people are hurting under their load of debt and being squeezed by every other business person trying to make a profit, BeatingDebt.org offers solutions that are based on your needs, not on profit potential.
We recognize that Dave Ramsey’s organization has successfully infiltrated almost every Christian financial teaching facet of the market and is moving at a fast rate into the secular market as the Fox News financial “guru.” However, we will continue to carve out our meager living off the blogging market and hope that those who are more inclined to express their ideas on a public blog are more inclined to be receptive to the neccesity of reducing debt in this country.
Good luck, Dave Ramsey, on your new tag line “Beat Debt.” We hope it brings you much success.

Dave Ramsey has been around long enough to prove his ideas work. And as one beat debts they will build wealth. BeatingDebt.org believes in the same thing, they just need the exposure and time to prove it. Ramsey charges for his products because maybe he thinks people will use it if they have to invest in it. And by selling his products he can turn around and earn a living for himself, employ some people and also give a lot of it away. Sometimes free stuff looks like cheap stuff. But BDO is trying to help people that can’t afford the other stuff. BeatingDebt.org has a lot of ideas and helps to offer people, to help them get out of debt and stay there, and to help them build their wealth along the way, too. Both organizations have the same goal, to help set Americans free from debt.
