Discover Card Commercial Review August 13, 2008

The trouble is – there’s so much cool stuff its easy to get little carried away.

If that happens, this material world of ours can stop being wonderful and start getting stressful.

What if they admitted there was a time to spend and a time to save?

What if instead of encouraging us to spend more, they actually helped us spend smarter?

Those are some wonderful lines from this commerical.  Discover Card credit card company made a wonderfully hip, soft, and inviting commerical to convince us to use their credit card.  Like many other commercials there are nuggets of truth within this persuasive marketing advertisement.  But there is not enough truth to the commercial for us to run to their credit card company and purchase “needed” items on their card.

We should always stay away from debt.

There is a time to spend and a time to save.

 1 There is a time for everything, and everything on earth has its special season.  2  There is a time to plant and a time to pull up plants.  5 There is a time to throw away stones and a time to gather them.  Ecclesiastes 3

So, yes, there is a time to spend and to save.  But everything, spending and saving, should be done in balance to your financial goals.

Discover wants us to trust them to help us spend smarter.  I am not sure if we should trust a credit card company to help us spend more responsibly.  If they made some tangible commitments to us, rather than a persuasive marketing commercial, then we might be able to trust they are doing everything in their power to make a reasonable profit without using predatory marketing tactics.  BeatingDebt.org started ShopResponsibly.org to help educate consumers and business owners on the need to make informed financial decisions without the need for predatory marketing tactics.

Yeah, I would love to see how “easy” it would be for this credit card to make my life “better” and to “increase” my savings account. Riiiight. And I was born on Mars.
