Going green to beat debt

In the April 2008 Reader’s Digest magazine, there are two articles about “going green”. Going green is the hip new term that says you are in the know and are trying to reduce your carbon foot print. This is a great concept. The Bible also says,

Ps. 24:1: “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.”

We can easily adapt our lifestyles to support green initiatives that help keep our environment clean and honor God’s creation. But let’s also realize that being green can also be a great way to help reduce spending and allow for more monies to be spent on beating debt.

There are simple things suggested by the article that can help you be more “green” and beat debt.

Shutting down equipment: It is surprising how much electricity it takes to keep electronics on, even when they are in hibernation mode. Keeping your computer, rechargeable electronics, TV, DVD player, or radio plugged in sucks small amounts of electricity. Every hour, the combination of each of these wastes whole kilowatts of energy. By unplugging those items, you can reduce the amount you spend on electricity every month.

Sealing up the house: During the extreme cold and heat of seasons, it is very important to keep the room temperature air inside the house and prevent it from leaking to the outside. By ensuring all windows and doors are properly secure and sealed, you can reduce the amount the heaters or air conditioners are working to keep your house at room temperature. This will save the amount of energy your family is sucking from the environment as well as reduce the amount the heaters/air conditioners suck from your wallet.

Think locally: The next time your family is ready for a vacation, think locally. Instead of flying to some foreign country or far off place, think what can be done in your local area or state. The amount of energy and money that is required to send your family in an airplane to some exotic place can easily be reduced by driving. It is surprising how many new sites and sounds are in your local area that never get explored. So, the next time you want a vacation, save some energy and money and think locally.

These three small ideas can make you feel better because you are helping the environment and keeping more money in your wallet.

What other ideas are there to help the environment that can also help you further your debt payment goal?
